“My hands are my microphones” - Hind Bin Demaithan
Hind Bin Demaithan Al Qemzi is a full time visual artist and video composer, curator and creative consultant; Having previously held the position of Head Curator of Dubai Design District (d3).
Woman, religion, culture, daily news and her personal life inspire her work. Stating social commentaries and stories that she shares through her hands. She states: “My hands are my microphones. They allow me to speak in many languages such as photography, installation, performance and video, languages that communicate to everyone”. With a growing passion of collaging techniques and assembling different forms to create a whole Hind identifies herself as a “master of science in the arts” a discoverer and a creator. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. Her most recent work includes video design for immersive performances. Primarily in Los Angeles, California where she received her MFA in Theater and Integrated Media with a concentration in Video for Performance at CalArts (Califronia Institute of the Arts). She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from Zayed University.
Her most recent work was presented at Emirati Expressions 2015 exhibition at Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi. With an interactive installation piece under the title “...w hay hy ilyama'a (... and this is a get together)”. It’s an exploration of social and interpersonal issues that are pertinent to Hind personally, as well as to the wider society. In this work she is dealing with the impact that technological advances have had on our social communication – allowing each person to be interacting with their wider social network whilst isolated within their immediate social environment. This participatory installation displayed at Emirati Expression is the second edition from the original piece that took place in 2011 at Al Bastakya House 44. With a reformed level of participation and execution of the original piece.
Hinds’ video design was presented at the Walt Disney Modular Theater at CalArts 2014, for an original immersive multimedia performance installation co-written by John Johnson and Allison Keating, Directed by Allison Keating. The show is inspired by America’s 2012 drought, Hurricane Sandy and Hansel & Gretel by the Brothers Grimm. Her latest art installation was a commissioned piece by ArtDubai “from Cali, with love” 2013 consisting of weekly virtual post cards posted on a blog run by the fair, reflecting her practice and experiences being away from her hometown Dubai.
Her past work has been displayed at venues including Art Stays 10th festival of contemporary art ART STAYS, Ptuj - Slovenia 2012; Tashkeel Gallery at the Art Dubai Fair, Dubai - U.A.E 2011; Caravane no.1 show at Art of MENA Gallery, Paris - France 2011; ‘The Heart of Phoenix: Art and Culture of the UAE-Sharjah’ at Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art - Korea 2011; The Gulf Re-Veiled at Lahd Gallery, London – England 2010; Emerge: ways of world making’ at San Servolo and Ristorante La Colomba during the Venice Biennale, Venice – Italy 2009; Stop the Clock at Edinburgh College of Arts, Edinburgh – Scotland 2008.
Her past productions include Video Design for The interview 2013 a play by Susan Josephs directed by Diana Wyenn, presented at Studio/Stage LA; Skyview Double Feature 2013 by Isabel Salazar, directed by Dan Bonnell; The Murder Ballad 2013 workshop production by Poor Dog Group; Bright Now Beyond 2012 an adaptation of L. Frank Baum's The Marvelous Land of Oz. a collaboration by Daniel Alexander Jones and Bobby Halvorson; Echoes of a Thousand Hills 2012 a collaboration by Hope Azeda and Kay Matschullat, No Exit 2012 by Jean-Paul Sartre, directed by Kameron Steele all of which are CalArts productions.
Along side exhibitions and shows, Hind has represented her country in many official delegation such as an ambassador for the first U.A.E Pavilion in the Venice Biennale, Italy in 2009 and Sheikha Manal Bint Mohammed Al Maktoum Art Exchange Program, in 2009 Frieze Art Fair; ART Basel | Miami Beach in Basel Switzerland 2008 and Miami Beach USA in 2009.
